Fall Lawn Care: What Homeowners Should Do.

If you want a thriving lawn in our Alberta climate, you need to take fall lawn care seriously. Allow Scott's Quality Lawn Care to help you!

In Alberta, your lawn has just endured the hot sometimes treacherous summer months.  It's time for some smart lawn care practices before winter.

Here’s how to prepare your lawn so it's healthy and resilient heading into winter.

1. Fall Fertilization

It’s very important to feed your lawn before winter.  Fall Fertilization will:

  • Help your lawn recover from summer damage or stress.
  • Expand and feed your root system as above ground growth slows down.
  • Help your lawn store nutrients/energy during the winter which will aid in your lawn coming out of winter dormancy next spring.

It's very important to apply a balanced fertilizer specially formulated for Fall.  At Scott's Quality Lawn Care we feed the lawn with the right amount of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium to help your lawn into and throughout the winter season.

2. Fall Core Aeration

At Scott's Quality Lawn Care all our lawn care programs are aimed at making your lawn more drought tolerant.  Although aeration has a plethora of benefits, a more deeply rooted turf as a result of consistent aeration is a big one.  Aeration should be practiced at least annually by Alberta home owners.  One aeration can certainly help, but it must be done consistently to see optimal results.

Benefits of Aeration Include:

  • A more deeply rooted, and consequently more drought tolerant lawn.
  • Reduced soil compaction, resulting in new root growth.
  • Allowing better air, nutrient, and moisture exchange.

The Fall is an excellent time to aerate since the goal is to grow the root system.  As soil temperatures cool this is when your lawn's root system is most actively growing.  When you aerate in the Fall, this only helps with the process of growing and expanding the root system.

Be sure to add your fall fertilizer sometime in September too before the lawn goes into winter dormancy so nutrients can be absorbed.  Be sure to continue to water before winter dormancy too.  This is often neglected by most homeowners.

3. Don't Forget a Good Fall Clean-up

Finally be sure to clean-up your leaves and give your lawn a good final cut and trim at the lowest mowing height possible without damaging your roots or thatch layer.  The lower mowing height is to:

  • Reduce the risk of snow mould or other fungal diseases next spring
  • Reduce the risk of vole damage (they prefer longer turf)
  • Make your spring lawn preparation easier next season.
